Curtain of fire at Puu Oo on Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii

Puu Oo is a spatter cone in the eastern rift zone of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii that has been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983. The eruption began along fissures that split the ground forming a curtain of fire shown here on January 5 (Photograph by Norman G. Banks of the US Geological Survey).

By January, 2005, a total of 2.7 km3 of magma had covered an area of 117 km2 from the eastern rift south to the ocean (US Geological Survey).
